“Improving performance using your inherent wisdom to find the solution”

John Leary-Joyce (Founder of the Academy of Executive Coaching)

There is no single definition of mentoring. However, one point all definitions agree on is it focuses on helping people to learn. John Leary-Joyce, a revered coaching and mentoring expert rightly articulates mentoring as a process in supporting others to find solutions to the things that matter most, using and building on our existing wisdom and experiences. There is symmetry between this and with Liberating Brilliances learning principles; supporting problem solving through building on existing knowledge and experiences. Mentoring can be viewed as ‘working out aloud’, giving you the opportunity to sense make and connect ideas, and turn ideas into action. Mentoring is not a mentor giving us the answer nor guiding us to the mentors perceived desired outcome regardless of our context.

Mentoring Framework

Deciding to use a mentor is a deeply personal decision. You want to know the mentor is experienced and will take time to know you and understand your needs. A decade of coaching and mentoring has resulted in establishing a mentoring framework. This provides you with clarity of what the mentoring experience will be and how the mentor will engage with you. Mentoring is described as facilitative, authentic and compassionate:

Facilitative: creating opportunities to problem solve and sensemake

Authentic: consistently representing and behaving aligned to the values

Compassionate: Genuinely care for you and what matters most to you

Testimonials

"working with Alex in a mentorship role offered me an invaluable experience to reflect on and develop my skills in understand the relationship between the technical skills I had to do my job and the potential impact they could have on performance of the team. Through honest and challenging discussions we looked at the way I communicated, shared my ideas and developed relationship with the key people I worked, it was often not the technical skills that limited the potential! I learnt a lot about myself and my responsibility to challenge how I applied and developed knowledge to support the shared vision of a team. It was a great process and the skills developed with Alex during this time have been critical in my future roles”

Alex Hopson (British Sailing & formerly Ben Ainslie Racing)

“During a time of uncertainty in my career, I reached out to Alex for advice and guidance. What I thought to be a quick coffee and a brief dialogue, turned into a three hour caffeine fuelled thought download! Alex has a unique ability to create a comfortable environment that encourages vulnerability, challenge and self-reflection. Each interaction with Alex has offered a different experience in searching to understand meaning, when there appears none and steps for development to help steer direction in my career. I am incredibly grateful of the support and guidance Alex has given me over the years and would encourage anyone looking to progress and learn to reach out and open their mind to understanding and change.”
